Al-Jazeera’s famed attention to detail

Maybe if you’re launching an English version of your popular foreign language news channel, you should make sure that your promotional campaign can spell “satellite” correctly:

It’s too amusing to excuse such errors, really; if you’re buying a half page in a major newspaper (admittedly in this case the Guardian) you really should know better than to let it go out without a full proof-read. Let’s hope their news quality is much, much better.

  1. It’s probably their ad agency’s problem. AFAIK, newspapers don’t proof-read adverts, which this was; there’s usually a wall between the people who write the paper and the ad department to make sure that there’s no prejudice involved, and it’s quite likely that the ad department at the Guardian just pasted in whatever they were given. A shame that a few small typoes and a lack of proofing can mar the launch of what looks like an interesting channel.
    Note that I’m just bashing the advert’s poor spelling and the impression it made on me; unfortunately I’m on Telewest and so can’t get the channel (although at least we can’t get Fox News either) and therefore am not best placed to talk about channel quality. Shame.
